History of Milton

Established as a Blackwater River trading post in 1825 is Milton, a city with a full history and the charm and appeal of a southern small town. Milton is one of Florida's most historic cities. Milton likely got its name as a derivation of "milltown," which represents Milton's central role in the early years of the lumber industry.

Historical preservation is very important in Santa Rosa County, evidenced by the Historic Downtown District in Milton. This area includes historic attractions, like the Imogene Theater and Museum, Ollinger-Cobb House, the L and M Train Museum, St. Mary's Episcopal Church, and the Bethune Blackwater Schooner, preserved in the waters on Milton's harbor.

Milton is presently known for wonderful canoeing, as well as water sports in the Blackwater River. The Blackwater Heritage Trail follows the old Florida-Alabama Railroad route and provides scenic tours for bikers, hikers, and joggers.
